Pennsylvania...a little slice of heaven

So Spring Break has come and gone. Well, basically anyway. Actually, I was luckier than most this year b/c I had two fun-filled relaxing weeks off from the dreaded UW. My internship at company X ended and I finished my classes on Friday two weeks ago. I have a new job/internship with Alaska Airlines Magazine for the next 3 months, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good b/c it gives me clips (yes, actual clips) and experience in a newsroom atmosphere. Bad b/c it doesn't pay. So I have to take out a loan for my last quarter at the UW and move home with my mom. Well, everyone has to make sacrifices now and then...

All this means I shall be moving home for two months. Until my sister comes home from Western. Then I'll have to find an apartment since Lauren will be staying there over the summer and as everyone should know at this point, my darling little sister and I do not get along too well. Hopefully I'll have a job by then, considering I'll be a recent college grad. Yeah, I know what you're all thinking..."not a problem, the job market is filled with openings for aspiring journalists." Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Oh well, at least I've put off the job/apartment stress for a couple of months.

So, after an exceedingly stressful quarter, I finally got to relax. Well, until I got on the plane to head to my "back-up" destination on the East Coast. The always fun, never boring, incredible party town that is known as State College, PA. For those of you in the Northwest, it's similar to Bellingham, except a little more backwoods. Though with famed stores such as Sheetz and Weis and exciting attractions like the creamery and the really big football stadium (cuz I'm a big follower of sports considering I've never actually been to a Huskies game), there was a lot for me to do. Like "pasting and sealing" or avoiding brawls with a drunk white-trash father of three at the neighborhood bowling alley.

All right, all right, it wasn't all THAT bad. I did enjoy freezing my ass off sleeping on an air-mattress and being down wind of my dear friend Bennett...who snores.... LOUDLY. And I enjoyed helping him get to bed after a long night of drinking and cigar smoking. And I'm sure his gracious roommate Dan enjoyed the constant bickering between Bennett and I all night. For those of you who have experienced Bennett and I "moving furniture" before, I'm sure you can sympathize with poor Dan. And his sister Carol, who could barely get two words in amongst the constant teasing and banter of "The Group" (not to be confused with "The Core").

Oh, I met a lot of interesting people from PA, most of whom have never been to the West Coast. Apparently they consider Chicago the West and anything past that the "Louisiana Territory." Smart people...really. :-) For those of you from good ol' Bishop Blanchet High School, I met the East Coast equivalent of Mike McGovern. Of course, I didn't realize how odd the East McGovern was until he offered me a personal tour of all the bars in State College and stood uncomfortably close to me as we walked to the dining hall...yeah, thanks for the heads up Bennett. We had a good laugh about that and proceeded to ruin McGovern's reputation for all those in State College. So Mike, if you're reading this, I'd steer clear of PA.

In such a lively town as the one described above, you can imagine we had a lot to do. Like drinking, playing pool, and drinking. We drank three out of the five nights I was there. We also played pool. 15 games of it. And whilst my team may have TECHNICALLY lost to Dan and Bennett, I would like to plead immunity from such degradation by pointing out that TIMMY/Justin/"Mike" was responsible for at least 5 of our losses. Now this may come as a shock to those of you who know Timmy. He is a bright, witty, highly intelligent and sharp individual with innovative ideas and a knack for following difficult conversations. So why did we lose? Apparently, while he can carry on stimulating conversations regarding his favorite color, food, sport, etc., he is incapable of breaking - WITHOUT scratching - at the beginning of a game of pool. Admittedly, I did scratch the time I attempted to save Timmy from the embarrassment that is his ability to play pool. However, I'd like to also point out that it is exceedingly difficult for one to concentrate while Bennett and Timmy are "gettin' jiggy wit it" on the opposite end of the pool table. I think I've seen enough attention paid to Timmy's crotch to last me a lifetime.

Perfect environment for a would-be priest wouldn't you say? Yeah, me too.

Let's see, well then there was Jeff. And Linda. Jeff was a great guy, very funny and sarcastic, which is how I take my men. And my coffee. Unfortunately, Jeff is madly in love with Linda, his left hand. Yes Linda, from Fargo, is the love of his life and joined him in many heartfelt renditions of "This One's for the Girls" by Reba McEntire. I'm not gonna argue with ya, she and Jeff kept Dan, Bennett, and me up all night. Not that we wouldn't have been up late anyway. Ah, sleepovers are the best.

Moira joined us for Bennett's birthday and Palm Sunday on the last day of my mini-vacation. It was nice to see a familiar face and have some one there to back me up on the insanity that is Bennett Lee Lo. And Palm Sunday was a hoot. Its been a couple weeks (years) since I've been to church and I had forgotten how much fun it is to witness the dramatic reenactment of Jesus' last days on Earth. Really uplifting. Best part of waking up is Jesus in your cup.

Then there was Bennett's birthday. He hated my present, but hey, at least I got him one. I was tempted to buy him something really meaningful, but then I remembered how big an ass he is and decided my presence last weekend was more than enough of a gift for him.

All and all, great trip and I had lots of fun. The three flights back and the four-hour lay over in Salt Lake City, not so fun. But hey, any time you can visit another part of the country where paper toilet seat covers do not exist and are never in use, the better. Thank you to everyone at THE Pennsylvania State University. I enjoyed meeting you all and sharing in the adventures that are your every day lives. :-)
